Overview

Online casino ads often feature phrases like “100% welcome bonus,” “35x wagering,” and “no-deposit free spins.” This page is a group entry that organizes terms used in casino bonuses and promotions. Understanding bonus terms lets you see what conditions “money that looks free” actually comes with.

For reference, using an online casino without government approval is illegal in Korea. These terms are explained to help you understand systems and ads in overseas regulated markets.

Bonus types

The most common form of bonus a casino gives.

Welcome bonus

A bonus given to players who sign up and make their first deposit.

Many offer a bonus of a set percentage of the first deposit (e.g., 100%) when a new player makes their first deposit. Some countries, like Sweden, allow only one welcome bonus, and others, like Belgium, ban bonuses altogether (Sweden, Belgium).

Deposit bonus

A bonus given in proportion to the amount you deposit.

A type that gives a set percentage of the deposited amount as a bonus. With “100% up to 100,000,” depositing 100,000 adds a 100,000 bonus. Most bonuses come with wagering requirements.

No-deposit bonus

A small bonus given just for signing up, with no deposit required.

A small bonus or free spins given just for signing up, without a deposit. In return, the wagering requirement is high and there is often a cap on the amount you can withdraw.

Free spins bonus

A promotion that gives you a set number of free spins on a specific slot.

A promotion where a casino gives a number of free spins on a specific slot. It is different from the free spins feature triggered by scatters inside a game. Wagering requirements often apply to winnings from free spins as well.

Reload bonus

A bonus given to existing players when they deposit again.

A bonus given when an existing player makes an additional deposit. It is often given regularly, such as weekend bonuses or day-of-the-week bonuses.

Cashback

A promotion that returns part of the amount you lost over a set period.

Returns part of the amount lost over a set period (e.g., 10%). Sometimes it is paid as cash with no wagering requirement, and sometimes as a bonus.

Bonus terms

Conditions you must follow to turn a bonus into cash.

Wagering

The amount you must bet before you can withdraw a bonus.

A condition that requires you to bet a multiple of the bonus (or deposit plus bonus) to turn it into cash. With a 10,000 bonus and 35x wagering, you must bet 350,000. In the process you lose the house edge, so on a 96% RTP slot you would lose on average 350,000 × 4% = 14,000, which is more than the bonus. The higher the wagering multiplier, the lower the real value of the bonus (house edge).

Game contribution

The percentage of each bet that counts toward wagering, by game type.

A rate set differently for each game that determines how much of a bet counts toward the wagering requirement. Slots are usually 100%, table games like blackjack 10-20%, and some games 0%. It is a safeguard to prevent easily meeting wagering with low house edge games.

Max bet limit

The maximum amount you can bet per spin or round while using a bonus.

A rule that caps the amount you can bet at once while playing with a bonus. If you break it, the bonus and winnings can be cancelled.

Max withdrawal limit

The maximum amount you can withdraw from winnings made with a bonus.

With some bonuses, such as no-deposit bonuses or free spins, you can only withdraw up to a set amount no matter how much you win.

Validity period

The deadline for meeting the bonus and wagering conditions.

If you do not meet the wagering within a set period (e.g., 7 or 30 days) after receiving the bonus, the bonus and related winnings disappear.

Excluded games

Games you cannot play with a bonus or that do not count toward wagering.

A list of games that cannot be played or do not count toward wagering while using a bonus. High RTP slots, jackpot slots, and bonus buy features are often excluded.

Sticky bonus

A bonus where the bonus amount itself cannot be withdrawn, only the winnings.

A type where the bonus amount “sticks” to the account and cannot be withdrawn, and only the amount won with that bonus can be withdrawn.

Balance and tiers

Terms about account balances and loyalty programs.

Cash balance and bonus balance

Money you can withdraw right away versus bonus money that still has conditions attached.

The cash balance is money you can withdraw right away, and the bonus balance is money you can withdraw only after meeting the wagering requirement. Usually the cash balance is used first, then the bonus balance.

Loyalty program

A system that gives points and tier perks the more you bet.

A system where you earn points based on your bets and, as your tier rises, receive perks such as cashback, a dedicated manager, and event invitations. Casinos often set perks based on theoretical loss rather than actual loss.

Calculating the real value of a bonus

Say you meet the wagering with a 100,000 bonus, 30x wagering, and a 96% RTP slot.

ItemValue
Total bets required100,000 × 30 = 3,000,000
Average loss (4% house edge)3,000,000 × 4% = 120,000
Expected value of a bonus100,000 – 120,000 = -20,000

If the wagering requirement is high, receiving the bonus itself can be a loss on average. You need to consider the wagering multiplier, game contribution, and validity period together to know the real value.
