Tumbling Tumble (Cascading Reels)

Overview
Tumbling (Tumble) is a mechanic where winning symbols disappear from the screen and symbols from above drop down, or new symbols fall, into the empty spaces. If the refilled screen produces another win, those symbols disappear too, and the chain continues until there are no more wins. That is why a single spin can win multiple times.
Each provider uses a different name. Pragmatic Play calls it “Tumble,” Big Time Gaming calls it “Reaction,” NetEnt calls it “Avalanche,” and many others call it “Cascade (Cascading Reels).” They all work on the same principle.
How it works
- The spin lands a winning combination.
- The win is paid, and the symbols that made the win disappear.
- The remaining symbols drop down, and new symbols fall into the empty spaces.
- If a new win forms, go back to step 2. If there is no win, the spin ends.
No extra bet is placed while the chain continues. The total win for one spin is the sum of all wins that occurred during the chain.
Combining with multipliers
Tumbling becomes powerful when it meets multipliers. In many games, the multiplier rises with each chain, or multiplier symbols that land on screen are all multiplied together when the spin ends.
| Games | How wins work | Multiplier type |
|---|---|---|
| Sweet Bonanza | 6×5, 8 or more anywhere (scatter pays) | During free spins, bomb multipliers are added up after the tumble and applied |
| Gates of Olympus | 6×5, 8 or more anywhere | Zeus multiplier orbs are added together; they accumulate during free spins |
| Sugar Rush | 7×7 cluster | Winning twice in the same cell creates a position multiplier that doubles each time |
| Gonzo’s Quest (NetEnt) | 5×3 paylines | Multiplier rises with each chain, up to 15x in free spins |
| Bonanza (BTG) | 메가웨이즈 | +1 for each reaction during free spins, no reset |
History
NetEnt’s Gonzo’s Quest (2010-2011) was an early landmark that popularized this mechanic with its “Avalanche Reels”: instead of spinning, stone blocks fall, winning blocks break, and new ones drop in. Later, when Pragmatic Play combined tumbles with an “anywhere win” system in Sweet Bonanza (2019), tumbling became one of the most common slot structures today. Among the Pragmatic Play games listed on AI Slot, 175 use tumbling alone.
Win types used together
Tumbling is also used with payline games, but it pairs especially well with “scatter pays” (where a certain number of the same symbol anywhere wins), “cluster pays” (where adjacent symbols win), and “Megaways” (where reel height changes). That is because the winning combinations change significantly each time symbols disappear and refill.
How it feels
In tumbling games, one spin often runs long while wins keep piling up. On the other hand, if the first result has no win, it ends right away. Games combined with multipliers generally have high volatility.
