Overview
GigaBlox is a slot mechanic created by the Swedish-founded provider Yggdrasil. Its core is “GigaBlox” symbols several times larger than normal ones landing on the reels. They are usually 2×2 to 4×4, and some games go up to 6×6. Yggdrasil classifies it as one of its Game Engagement Mechanics (GEMs) and holds it as a trademark (™).
June 2020 Lucky Neko GigaBlox was the first game to use it, and it has since appeared in dozens of games from Yggdrasil and its partner studios.
How it works
Giant symbols land
In GigaBlox games, large block symbols land at random alongside regular 1×1 symbols on every spin. For example, Beasty Blox GigaBlox officially promises at least one giant symbol between 2×2 and 4×4 on every spin.
They split when wins are counted
A GigaBlox symbol covers several cells on screen, but for wins it is split into as many matching symbols as cells it covers. A 2×2 block counts as 4 matching symbols, 3×3 as 9 and 4×4 as 16. Most GigaBlox games pay in ways, so several matching symbols on a reel multiply the number of winning ways.
| Block size | Cells covered | Symbols when split |
|---|---|---|
| 1×1 (regular) | 1 cell | 1 |
| 2×2 | 4 cells | 4 |
| 3×3 | 9 cells | 9 |
| 4×4 | 16 cells | 16 |
| 6×6 (some games) | 36 cells | 36 |
An example
Say a 6-reel game lands one matching symbol on reel 1 and a 4×4 GigaBlox across reels 2 to 5. The 4×4 block counts as four matching symbols on each of reels 2 to 5, so that one symbol makes 1x4x4x4x4 = 256 ways. The more large blocks connect from the left, the faster wins grow.
Features it pairs with
GigaBlox is often combined with other features.
- GigaBlox wilds: wilds can also land as big blocks, covering many cells at once.
- Multipliers: GigaGong GigaBlox and others have GigaBlox multiplier symbols that split and multiply each other.
- Combined with other GEMs: Pearl Reef GigaBlox MultiMax pairs it with MultiMax, another Yggdrasil mechanic.
History
| Date | Event |
|---|---|
| 2020.06 | First GigaBlox game, Lucky Neko, released |
| 2020.10 | Hades GigaBlox adds GigaBlox battles |
| 2020.12 | GigaBlox, Splitz and MultiMax opened to YG Masters partners |
| 2021.03 | Peter & Sons signs a GigaBlox license |
| 2021.11 | 90K Yeti GigaBlox brings 6×6 blocks and a 90,000x max win |
In December 2020 Yggdrasil expanded its YG Masters partner program so partner studios could use GigaBlox too. That is why many GigaBlox games released under the Yggdrasil name were made by partners; 2023’s Beasty Blox GigaBlox, for example, was made by Jelly.
RTP and volatility
GigaBlox games usually have RTPs around 96% and lean high volatility. Ways multiply fast when big blocks connect from the left, but blocks in the wrong place can mean no win at all. Max wins vary widely; on AI Slot they range from 1,430x (Suncatcher GigaBlox) to 90,000x (90K Yeti GigaBlox).
