Overview
A jackpot (Jackpot) is a big prize offered in slots separately from regular wins. There are many kinds, from fixed jackpots with set amounts, to progressive jackpots that grow into the billions of won as bets from multiple casinos pool together, to jackpots that must hit within a set time.
This page is a combined entry gathering slot jackpot types and related terms in one place. Actual jackpot networks such as Mega Moolah, Dream Drop, and Daily Drop are covered in more detail in each provider’s entry.
Classification by amount type
Classified by how the jackpot amount is determined.
Fixed jackpots
Fixed JackpotiA jackpot whose amount is preset as a multiple of your bet.
A jackpot whose amount is set in advance, such as “1,000x your bet.” It has nothing to do with other players’ bets, and if you raise your bet, the jackpot grows by the same ratio. The Mini, Minor, Major, and Grand jackpots in Hold & Spin games are mostly fixed jackpots.
Progressive jackpot
iA jackpot that keeps growing as a portion of each bet is added, until someone wins it.
A jackpot where part of each player’s bet builds up in the jackpot pool, so the amount keeps growing until someone wins. After it hits, it returns to a set starting amount and builds up again. Microgaming’s Mega Moolah set a Guinness record when a progressive jackpot of about 18.9 million euros hit.
Seed amount
iThe base amount a jackpot resets to after it is won.
The base amount a progressive jackpot restarts from after it hits. For example, the Dream Drop Mega Jackpot from Relax Gaming starts at 1 million euros.
Jackpot contribution rate
iThe share of each bet that goes into the jackpot pool.
The share of player bets that goes into the jackpot pool. In progressive jackpot games, part of the RTP is the jackpot contribution, so excluding the jackpot, the base game’s RTP is often designed to be lower than in regular games.
Classification by link range
Classified by how far the progressive jackpot is linked.
Local jackpot
iA jackpot that builds up only within a single game or a single casino.
A progressive jackpot built only from bets within a single game or a single casino. With fewer participants, the amount is smaller but it hits relatively more often.
Wide-area jackpot
iA jackpot that pools bets from multiple casinos and multiple games.
A progressive jackpot that ties bets from multiple casinos and multiple games into a single jackpot pool. With so many participants, the amount grows very large. IGT’s Megabucks was the first wide-area progressive jackpot slot system, and online, Mega Moolah, Blueprint’s Jackpot King, and Playtech’s Age of the Gods are typical examples.
Classification by payout method
Classified by when and how the jackpot hits.
Tiered jackpot
iA jackpot split into several levels, such as Mini, Minor, Major, and Grand.
A jackpot split into several tiers with different amounts. Four tiers, Mini, Minor, Major, and Grand (or Mega), are the most common, and the lower the tier, the more often it hits. In many games, a wheel bonus or Hold & Spin decides which tier you receive.
Deadline jackpot
iA jackpot guaranteed to drop before a set time or amount is reached.
A jackpot that is set to hit “before 11 PM every night” or “before the amount reaches a certain figure.” Unlike a regular progressive jackpot that can hit at any time, it has a deadline. Red Tiger’s Hourly and Daily Drops and the Daily Jackpot in Relax Gaming’s Dream Drop are typical examples.
Random jackpot
iA jackpot that can trigger randomly on any spin, with no specific combination needed.
A jackpot that triggers randomly on any spin, without a set symbol combination. It is usually designed so that a bigger bet slightly raises the chance of triggering it.
Guaranteed jackpot game
iA format where entering the jackpot feature always wins a jackpot at some tier.
A system where entering the jackpot bonus guarantees you win one of several tiers. Relax Gaming’s Dream Drop promotes this system.

Max win and jackpot
iMax win is the cap set by the game's rules, while a jackpot is a separate prize.
“Max 5,000x” is the cap on what you can win at once in that game, while a jackpot is a prize offered separately from regular wins. In progressive jackpot games, the jackpot amount keeps growing regardless of the max win multiplier.
