The doghouse grows into a Megaways slot

The Dog House, released in May 2019, was a 5×3 slot with a max win of 6,800x. The following year, The Dog House Megaways raised the stakes with 27,300x, and the series later branched out into Multihold, Dog or Alive, Mötley Crüe, and Royal Hunt. This May, The Big Dog House arrived. “The Dog House Megaways 1000,” released on July 13, applies the 1000 formula to the Megaways line.

By the numbers alone, the 27,300x of the 2020 Megaways version is still the series’ best. This game’s 25,000x is slightly lower. What changed greatly is the cap on wild multipliers.

The Dog House has been loved for so long because of its simplicity. Dog characters are the high-paying symbols, and the doghouse-shaped wilds carry multipliers. In the bonus, wilds stay where they land. This framework has barely changed as the series grew to seven games, and this one is no different. What changed is how big the wild multipliers can get and how multipliers combine.

Wild multipliers multiply instead of adding

The board is a 6-reel, 7-row Megaways grid. The number of symbols changes on each reel, and wins can form in up to 117,649 ways. Wilds carry multipliers capped at 1,000x. They drop in both the base game and the bonus.

This is the heart of the game. When two or more multiplier wilds are part of one win, their values don’t add up but multiply together. A 3x and a 5x together make 15x, not 8x. If you’re used to games that add multipliers, it feels quite different. Just a few small multipliers overlapping makes the number grow fast.

A few numbers show how powerful the multiplication is. If three 2x wilds land on one win, adding them gives 6x, but multiplying gives 8x. With two 5x wilds and one 10x wild, adding gives 20x and multiplying gives 250x. The same wilds on the board can produce results that differ by more than ten times. That is why the 25,000x cap doesn’t feel so far out of reach.

Megaways and wilds also pair well. On spins where the reels come out tall, the number of ways grows into the tens of thousands, and a single wild touches that many more winning lines. On spins where the reels come out short, a wild lands but fewer lines connect. The Megaways number shown on the panel at the top of the screen tells you right away how big that spin’s board is.

Choose between two bonus paths

Free spins start with 3 to 6 scatters and run up to 20 spins. Before you go in, you pick one of two modes. In Sticky Wilds, the multiplier wilds that land stay in place until the bonus ends. In Random Wilds, up to 6 wilds drop at random on every spin.

The two modes have opposite personalities. In Sticky, if you place a few multiplier wilds well early on, every later spin carries that multiplier. A bad start stays flat to the end. In Random, every spin is a fresh board, so there are fewer ups and downs but less of the buildup thrill. Given the multiplying structure, Sticky has more room for a big hit.

Just try each mode ten times in the demo and the difference in feel is obvious. In Sticky, the whole bonus hinges on whether wilds land in the first two or three spins. In Random, a few new wilds drop on every spin, so a round often comes back to life midway. The original The Dog House Megaways used the same two modes, but its wild multipliers were 2x and 3x. The same choice carries a completely different weight now that it meets a 1,000x cap.

There’s one more thing. In every bonus, each reel is guaranteed never to shrink below the number of sticky wilds sitting on it. Because reels can shrink in Megaways games, wilds that were stuck in place could otherwise get pushed out, and this is the safeguard against that.

The Super Bonus uses both features

If you enter the bonus through a Super Scatter, one of two enhanced Super Bonus tiers opens. Both Sticky Wilds and Random Wilds appear here. In the higher tier, every wild that lands stays to the end. You don’t have to choose, and you get the strengths of both modes at once.

There are two ways to reach the Super Bonus. You can land Super Scatters in the base game, or use the higher bonus buy options. The media pack does not list a separate Super Bonus entry frequency. It’s natural to assume it is correspondingly rare.

Free spins arrive once every 388 spins on average, which is a fairly high bar. The media pack rates volatility at four out of five lightning bolts, meaning volatility is on the high side. On the other hand, 1,000x or more hits once every 50,000 spins, which is more often than in other games with a similar cap.

There are plenty of purchase options too. The bonus buy comes in three options at 100x, 500x and 2,500x your bet, and the feature buy in two options at 20x and 500x. The ante bet is 3x. The 2,500x purchase looks like the top option that leads toward the Super Bonus. The bet range is 0.2 to 240, and the max payout limit is 6 million.

Compare it with The Big Dog House, released in May of the same year, and the direction becomes clear. The Big Dog House went big on the board with a max of 15,000x. Megaways 1000 opens the cap up to 25,000x and adds a feature buy, a bonus buy and an ante bet. It shows that Pragmatic Play alternates lighter and heavier releases even within the same series.

If you’ve followed the Dog House series from the start, the most unfamiliar thing here is probably the multiplying multipliers. The original’s 2x and 3x wilds can now reach 1,000x, and they multiply when they overlap. Switching between Sticky and Random in the free demo shows the difference between the two modes right away. RTP is 96.50%.
