Overview
DoubleMax is a multiplier mechanic that Yggdrasil uses as one of its Game Engagement Mechanics (GEMs). It runs on a chain structure (tumble) where winning symbols disappear and new ones drop in. The key point is that the win multiplier doubles with every consecutive win. Because it grows by multiplying rather than adding, the multiplier climbs very fast as the chain gets longer.
Raptor DoubleMax, released in August 2021, was the first widely known game with it. Since then it has become one of the mechanics that Yggdrasil’s partner studios use most often. AI Slot lists 36 DoubleMax games.
How the Multiplier Doubles
When you start a spin, the multiplier is x1. After a win, the winning symbols are removed and new symbols drop into the empty spots, and in many games one or more wilds are added at this point. If the next cascade also wins, the multiplier doubles. The Raptor DoubleMax release materials described this multiplier as having no cap.

Even with the same 10-step chain, a system that adds 1 each time ends at x10, while DoubleMax climbs to x512. On the other hand, if the chain breaks after one or two wins, the multiplier has almost no effect. The result is high volatility with very polarized outcomes.
Base Game vs. Free Spins
- Base game: when the wins stop and the chain ends, the multiplier returns to x1.
- Free spins: the multiplier is not reset when the spin changes and carries over. This is the stretch where a multiplier built up across several spins can lead to a big win.
