Evolution Launches North America-Focused Slot Brand "Spinning Whale"
SUMMARY

Key takeaways

  • On September 29, Evolution launched Spinning Whale, a slot brand built exclusively for North America.
  • The sixth slot brand under the group, built around the tastes of US players.
  • The first game is 888 Dragons Fortune Hold & Win, an Asian-themed slot in the land-based casino style.
  • It rolls out across North America through the One-Stop Shop (OSS) in November, with more titles to follow starting in 2027.

Evolution’s group has added another slot brand: Spinning Whale, announced on September 29. What sets it apart from the existing brands is that it was built from the start around North American, and especially US, players.

The sixth slot brand

Evolution now has six slot brands: Nolimit City, NetEnt, Red Tiger, Big Time Gaming, Sneaky Slots, and now Spinning Whale. The first four are studios that mostly started in Europe and spread worldwide. Spinning Whale has a different starting point.

According to the company, Spinning Whale was built with the tastes of North American slot players in mind, while also aiming for international appeal. By adding content in a distinct style that doesn’t overlap with its existing studios, Evolution says it can make more games tailored to the North American market.

The first game is in the land-based casino style

The debut title is 888 Dragons Fortune Hold & Win. It’s an Asian-themed game that reworks the classic slot machine style common in US land-based casinos for online play. The number 8, dragons and a Hold & Win structure are a combination that has been popular on the Las Vegas casino floor for a long time.

European online slots and US slots appeal to quite different tastes. European slots often lead with complex features and high multipliers, like Megaways or x mechanics. US players respond more to the Hold & Spin, jackpots and Asian lucky themes they know from the casino floor. Spinning Whale’s choice of first game shows exactly that difference.

The US online casino market is still legal in only some states, such as New Jersey, Pennsylvania and Michigan. Because each state opens its market separately, approval has to be won from each state regulator one by one. In return, once a foothold is established, competition is lighter than in Europe and revenue per player is higher. That’s why European providers set up separate US-only brands.

Evolution is already strong in the US with live casino. It opened a second studio in Michigan and launched MONOPOLY Live in several states. Slots are still the relatively weaker side. US companies that built land-based casino slot machines are also strong online, so European-style slots alone are hard to push through, and that calculation is behind this move.

The number “888” is no coincidence either. In Chinese-speaking cultures, 8 is a number tied to wealth, and it’s a staple of Asian-themed slots in US casinos. Dragons, red and gold, and a Hold & Win with stacking coins. From its very first game, Spinning Whale follows the grammar of the US casino floor exactly.

Across North America in November, more titles in 2027

Spinning Whale will roll out across Evolution’s entire North American network in November. More games are planned from 2027. Distribution happens only through Evolution’s One-Stop Shop (OSS), so operators can receive Spinning Whale games alongside Evolution’s other content with a single integration.

Evolution North America CEO Jacob Claesson said, “North America is a core market for Evolution, and there is a big opportunity to grow our online slots business here.” In fact, Evolution’s North American revenue grew 9.5% year over year in Q2. We covered the details in our Q2 results article.

We don’t have any Spinning Whale games on our site yet, and there’s been no announcement of when they’ll reach the European and Asian markets. In the meantime, you can check out popular US titles from the same group, such as MONOPOLY Money, made under a Hasbro license, and Gonzo’s Quest Megaways.
