A reel multiplier mechanic Yggdrasil first introduced in 2020 with Multifly!. Wilds created during tumble wins raise the multiplier of their reel, and the multipliers of the reels in a win are multiplied together.

Overview
MultiMax is a game enhancing mechanic (GEM) from Yggdrasil in which multipliers attached to individual reels can apply together to a single win. It first appeared in March 2020 in Multifly! MultiMax, and Yggdrasil said at the time that up to 5 multipliers could be attached to one win.
In December 2020, Yggdrasil opened its mechanics to YG Masters partners, so outside studios could use MultiMax too. AI Slot has about 20 games with MultiMax in the name.
How reel multipliers build up
The basic flow is that tumble wins and wilds work together.
- Winning symbols vanish and new ones drop in.
- Every time a win lands, wilds appear on the screen.
- The multiplier on the reel where a wild appears goes up. In MultiFly! 2, each wild adds 1x, 2x, or 3x, and in the enhanced free spins it adds 2x, 3x, or 5x.
- When a win lands, only the multipliers of the reels that contributed symbols to that win are picked out and multiplied together.
Multiplying makes them grow at a different pace
Yggdrasil explains that when several reel multipliers overlap, they are “multiplied, not added.” In a 5-reel game with reel multipliers of 2, 3, 1, 4, and 5, a win across all five reels gives 2×3×1×4×5 = 120x. Adding the same numbers would have given only 15x. Crystal Falls Multimax, made with Bulletproof in 2021, stated that multiplied multipliers can reach up to 3,125x (5×5×5×5×5).
A variation that switched to adding
Not every MultiMax game uses multiplication only. MexoMax! MultiMax, released in July 2022, uses cluster pays. Each cluster win places a wild on the winning spot, and the multiplier on the reel above it goes up by 1. The win amount is multiplied by the sum of the relevant multipliers. In the base game, the multipliers reset when a spin has no win, and they carry over in free spins. The rules differ by game, multiplying or adding, so it’s a good idea to check the game info before you play.
