Top slots
| Games | Highlights |
|---|---|
| Buffalo | A flagship buffalo-themed series. With many ways to win (Ways) and free spin multipliers, it is a game that has become a symbol of US casinos |
| Lightning Link | A hit series that combines the Hold & Win mechanic of collecting coin symbols with a progressive jackpot |
| Dragon Link | A series that carries Lightning Link’s structure into Asian themes |
| Queen of the Nile | A classic Australian pokie with an Egyptian theme |
| 50 Lions, More Chilli | A classic Australian slot loved for years |
Many say the success of Lightning Link played a big role in spreading today’s common Hold & Win structure of “collecting coins and respinning” in online slots.

Founder and Ainsworth
Founder Len Ainsworth left Aristocrat and set up a separate slot company, Ainsworth Game Technology, which later had Novomatic as its largest shareholder. Aristocrat has fought several lawsuits against competitors over math models and designs, and in 2024 it won an injunction in a US court blocking sales of Light & Wonder‘s “Dragon Train.”
How the offline slot machine business works
Offline slot companies like Aristocrat sometimes sell machines to casinos, and sometimes lease them and take a share of the revenue under a participation model. Popular series like Lightning Link are mainly supplied under the participation model, so the more money flows through the casino, the more Aristocrat earns.
The minimum payback rate of offline slot machines differs by jurisdiction. For example, Nevada in the US sets a minimum of 75%, and some Australian states require 85% or more, and casinos choose a machine’s setting within that range. It is often lower than online slots (usually 94-97%) (Nevada Gaming Control Board).
Expansion into mobile and online
From the 2010s, Aristocrat expanded into social casino apps (Product Madness) and mobile games (Big Fish, Plarium). In the 2020s it then shifted toward the real-money online market, acquiring NeoGames in 2024 and creating “Aristocrat Interactive.” It sold its general mobile game business (Pixel United). The core strategy is to bring offline favorites like Buffalo and Lightning Link to online casinos.
Australia’s “pokies” culture
Australia is one of the countries with the most slot machines per capita in the world. “Pokies” are found not only in casinos but also in pubs and clubs. As a result, gambling harm is a topic of public debate, and some states are discussing tighter rules such as cash insertion limits and card-based play. Aristocrat is a company directly affected by these regulatory changes.
Headquarters
Aristocrat's headquarters is in North Ryde, Sydney, Australia.
